No Kidding

Almost everything that we experience is only partially serious; otherwise, no one who’s lived on earth for more than a few decades could still smile or laugh.

And the one thing that we experience with full seriousness - that's the very source of lightheartedness.

Book Note: Recently someone emailed who thought OF can only be ordered online, but it’s also available at bookstores by special order: ISBN is 978-1-934611-00-5.

Note to Regular Commenters: Speaking of blogging etiquette, as I did last post, I’m forced to breach it until I get a handle on a new medical development. For hopefully not more than the next few weeks, you may find me having to visit your blog less often. I usually spend some time visiting new blogs as one of the few things I can do to make people aware of the book; for now, the little time I have for blogging has to be spent mostly on that.

Hi Paul...

Thats really deep thought...

"the one thing that we experience with full seriousness - that's the very source of lightheartedness." -- Faith and Patience leaves one lighthearted, I came to believe in life...

Remember me? I came back last week..and then got a bit busy with work, my blog, replying to comments..but deep there, was missing something..and that was this blog...
I will be more regular here now...its so enligtening here...

SCOTT and PAULINE: Thanks for your good wishes. To avoid any misunderstanding: I have a progressive condition and there's been a downturn.

So it's a question of trying to get back on top in the sense of adapting to what's happened.

VISHESH: Sleep helps...

DEVIKA: Yes, I do. You're on just the wavelength I had in mind by alluding to faith and patience.

Hang in there Paul, do what you have to. I peek in occasionally to see what is going on but am flattered that you visit a even bother to visit a scurrilous old atheist like me at all!

DEVIKA, LEE and MISTI, thanks for those thoughts.

LEE - and for that matter,
PAULINE and others like DONN... I in turn really appreciate that you look in here, and I want to take the opportunity to mention that my book/blog has nothing to do with promoting - or discouraging - religious belief.

For any book in this genre, clearly the people most likely to pick it up would be folks who identifiy themselves as religious or spiritual.

But OF is non-doctrinal. I have no more desire to convert atheists to belief in God than try to argue anyone out of their beliefs.

In fact, asking me whether I believe in God would be a fair question for anyone who's read the book. Since it deals with experience and not doctrine, my position on this is left unstated.

Love, whatever you name it--is our source, that lifts us up to smiles and laughter...

...and Lee, atheist or not--I'm sure you understand.

I am so happy to see firebird strike the nail right on spot...

theism or atheism -- it's the light of love that leads us..I too beleive...Some see it as God, some as good/kind action, words...

thanks Paul, for ofering this platform to share my thoughts!

FIREBIRD and DEVIKA: To me, each of your comments suggest an attitude of... maybe you could call it non-attachment to one's beliefs. Maybe that would be a good topic for a post...

And I think Paul, you are right.
A sign of lack of deep, original faith --I ought to agree..

& look forward to that post :-)

Paul, I hope that
your "non-attachment" comment was not meant to say that Devika and I do not have real depth to our faith.

I prefer to think of it as the Eastern view of "non-attachment" which is the true essence of faith.

Since I am afraid Devika took it the opposite way, please explain.

FIREBIRD: I can see how the phrase non-attachment could be used that way, but I've never heard it done. In talking about religion, I'm only familiar with the eastern use. Since D is in India, I'd be really surprised if any of us had anything in mind other than lack of ego-involvement.

DEVIKA: Yeah... and my mom's particularly objective, lol..

Paul and Firebird:
I am not well studied in religious percepts...though it has got in me as a way of life that previous generations passed on to me...

With that base, I think 'non attachment' in eastern religion, may be Hinduism, is about 'non attachment' to material things --people, places, possessions et all, and to submit oneself just to God...HE being the eternal companion in life and death...

while we practice this, the ego as Paul said, comes in the way, to make 'our own' (do we have something of our own, if all is God's) definitions, decisions ...

our subtle association of God with love, in a way holding love at par or above GOD ..was our ego at work! I think, I feel , I believe ---all these represent ego...and that works against faith, against God finally..

that is my understanding ....no ego there..I'm open for a review :-)

Paul: lol...A mother, i feel ought to be objective, if she loves her child..and I love your mother for that :-)

DEVIKA: This is probably as good a place as any to bring up potentially controversial matters. Comments here can be diverse but I'm lucky that I seem to get such thoughtful commenters here.

I'll make the next post on non-attachment and we'll see what comes up, although there may be fewer comments than usual since I'll be too tied up with other things this coming week to have much chance of visiting others' blogs.
