Michael Jordan Inducted to Hall of Faith

Recently Jordan was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. I guess he may not know that he was also inducted into my hall of faith…

From Original Faith, Chapter Four, Stumbling Block – Ego:

"By the strong hand of our own love, we can even get the spin of a good influence from what was originally a bad or even terrible experience. We can use it for taking our best shot. For we are here to stay in the game until we start to gain a bird’s eye view of the court we’re all playing on, like Michael Jordan figuring whether to shoot, drive, or pass to somebody you wouldn’t even think he could see from where he was standing. Pain contracts us at first, but then enlarges our point of view if we face it until we can do something more than just react."

Have you ever found yourself truly inspired by a figure or event from the world of sports?

Susie - I never actually went to one. In my mid twenties though, I started in the public schools working with special ed kids and helped train one boy, which was a lot of fun.

The whole experience was an eye-opener for me. Going in, I think I'd somehow expected them to "all be the same" when in reality they were as diverse in their personalities and abilities as any other group of people.

Ah - the action instead of the reaction. I agree - pain contracts us first. When we get far enough into it, we get to choose how we feel about it.

And perhaps anything beautiful can be inspirational so long as it's seen as beautiful.

I never really liked sports but in college I had a boyfriend who was interested in weight training and through him I got interested in Arnold Schwarzenegger, even read one of his books. Also because of a different boyfriend I got interested in martial arts and Chuck Norris. They were good at what they did but I don't know if I can say they were inspirational.

Pauline – Not reacting has sometimes felt to me like practicing a conscious choice too, but also like a personal growth or evolution that was a process in its own right. And the relationship between spirituality and esthetics sounds worth exploring.

Crystal - Exposure to a sport increasing my interest/appreciation… I've discovered that too. On the inspiration front, it's been different things, but if I had to pick one specific type of sports situation that I've found genuinely inspiring, it's when two athletes compete to the very best of their abilities in a close match where the competition is so wonderful that finally your sense is that somehow there was no real "loser.”

In the sporting world, I would have to say "Rudy" inspired me the most. His determination and faith never failed. His team ended up inspired by him too!!!
