Embracing the Unwelcome Other: Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Spammers

This is a time of year that finds charitable donations up, neighborliness on the rise, and connections with family and friends reestablished. Yet how many of us exclude spammers as a group from our holiday charity and good cheer, treating each and all of them as the Unwelcome Other?

Spammers come to us from around the world, struggling to attract our attention by way of improbable messages. They are people just like you and me except for spamming and other illicit activities.

In the spirit of the season, I’ve devoted this comments thread to several spam messages received on this blog over recent weeks that struck me as especially sincere.

Spammed Me but Not Included Here?

Dear Excluded Spammer,

I hated to do it! But if your spam was just URLs without enough words to make out a sentence or phrase, I did not include it in this thread. I knew you wouldn’t have wanted folks to think you were just trying to use a random blog to sell stuff!

Also, very frankly, many of your messages were repetitive and, well, pretty boring.

Next time you contact me may I suggest something like the following Sample Spam.

Sincerely yours,

Paul

Sample Spam

Dear Mr. Martin,

If you’ll check your last month’s sales figures, you’ll notice that you’ve sold 100 copies more of Original Faith than your monthly average.

I was so deeply moved by your book and life’s story that I laughed, I cried – I sang Maureen McGovern’s “There’s Got to Be a Morning After” in the shower.

Then I went out and bought copies of OF for friends, family, colleagues, and anyone I knew with cruise ship plans.

Sorry for any inconvenience due to the sudden upsurge in orders!

Sincerely,

Full Name Including Middle Initial

PS Regular Readers

Please feel free to leave a normal comment – or try your hand at spamming! It doesn't need to be exactly like my sample, which was only to give a general idea…

As Time Allows – My illness is progressive and bedridden time has risen; I’m no longer able to reply to most comments and emails. I do read everything I get and sometimes this gives me ideas for posts. So please keep them coming and I’ll reply as time allows.

Cher Anonymous,

First, let me say that I’m touched that someone should struggle to surmount our language difference and assimilate enough of my site to discern that I am disabled – c’est marveilleux!

You have, alas, woefully mistaken the precise nature of my infirmity. It is a natural mistake; you see that I am disabled and of course find yourself moved by concern for my masculine health and wellness. And yet I have no need of your fine product for reasons that discretion and modesty forbid me to disclose.

Dear fellows!

Is it a problem to convert iTunes to mp3? I say NOPE :) Its really nervous not being able to play iTunes tracks with my $300 iriver!

But this tool really works for me and it converted quickly my iTuines entire library.

What is your way of doing it? Why itunes makes this stuff? I didn't like ipods at all!

thanks in advance!

i get tons of them on my office email too. mostly about some people leaving me their inheritance and bank officers diverting millions due to some 'dead' accounts. and oh ya, they also found out i need to lengthen some parts of my anatomy which i don't have in the first place. that's about it.
thank goodness yahoo mail has less of these.

my old blogs had a few slipping in here and there. but i deleted them all. and finally i deleted my blogs. so that's the end of everything.

i love your spammers in this post by the way. cool sites. :P

ach. I'm not witty enough to chime in this morning. Up too late answering phone calls that go "Hi, this is Scott! Debt getting you down? There's a light at the end of the tunnel, my friend, I've found it - it worked for me- and it's FREE! If you'd like to learn how you can keep your credit score high, eliminate your debt and get back on track, stay on the line! Oh - and did I say it's FREE?"

I stayed on the line the first time and politely explained that not only don't I need their services, but would like to be eliminated from their calling lists - but they slammed the phone down in my ear.

Just one more week and my "do not call" listing will have been in place the required month, and Scott & his ilk will - hopefully - stop calling. Or, (more likely) I'll start reporting them. Not that it helps, but it will amuse me to hope that they might get in trouble.

Because you see, dear Paul, there is a difference between this Unwelcome Other and I: I am not trying to cheat them and steal their money.

Hi Paul,
I am glad to see that your humor is out in full force. What fun answers. My husband is with Firebird on this. He gets German spam. Dozens a day! As for me, I get a lot of this....

Viagra, cheap, online, private.

Why do I keep getting Viagra spam when I am obviously a woman?! Guess spammers can't read.

I also love the ones that tell me I am a long lost friend and relative and there is mucho money to be claimed in an Arab republic somewhere. I wish. Do people really believe these?

Be well all!

I love your creativity and humor in turning the spams around on themselves.

I don't get spammed much--well I do but wordpress and a couple of plugins have been very good to me.

Too funny...Inspired by your spirit of sharing, I decided to paste a couple of my recent spams below...although I excluded one that was actually X-rated, not wanting to offend your delicate sensibilities:-)

"How can large people do yoga to slim down when they are too large to buy the clothes to go to yoga? A conundrum……" (ad for yoga studio)

"I want to make applications for the Apple Iphone and Ipod Touch. All kinds of applications but i dont know how to start and where to start from can somebody give me some help" (posted on a spiritual books for kids article)

"Wlv4Le rzbexxaysebe, jfebaqwjzohx, [link=http://qfplhnvunwft.com/]qfplhnvunwft[/link], http://lcficyawhtpw.com/" (always my favorites...)

"MILEY CYRUS NUDE MILEY CYRUS NUDE miley cyrus nude miley cyrus nude MILEY CYRUS NUDE MILEY CYRUS NUDE miley cyrus sex tape miley cyrus sex tape" (another favorite - and this is not the x-rated one)
