Staying Spiritually Strong in the Face of Sicko Health Care: Original Faith Blog Opens Series on Health Care Adversity

Author/Blogger Paul Maurice Martin draws on his extensive experience as a patient and health care reform activist to help raise public awareness of a broken U.S. health care system; participants will include professionals active in fields relating to health care reform.

PHILADELPHIA, PA, (MarketWire) September 20, 2007 — "Original Faith" author and blogger Paul Maurice Martin will begin a series of posts at http://www.originalfaith.com/blog/index.html on spiritual adversity that emphasize problems patients often encounter under America's health care system. Comments are open to the public. Posts may take direction from comments that are received.

In a recent radio interview, the Rev. Dr. C. Welton Gaddy questioned Martin concerning how his progressive illness has affected his life and work. The author's surprising answer was that it had less effect than one might suppose. However, the impact of Martin's continuing struggle with America's health care system has been profound. At first it was primarily mental and spiritual. Now, thirteen years later, it mainly consists of the increasing consequences of inadequate and sometimes improper medical attention to his physical well-being.

"It's ironic," Martin points out, "that folks who pay insurance premiums usually assume that if they get sick, they're covered for medical expenses relevant to the illness they actually have. While the 'preexisting condition' exclusion may be the best known, there are plenty of other ways that insurance corporations have to legally avoid providing coverage for you or your loved ones."

Martin will use his story to launch a series of blog posts about facing severe challenges to the human spirit with a special focus on adversities presented to patients and their families by America's failed health care system. Commentators in fields relating to health care reform that plan to participate include Mary Pat Aardrup, Senior Vice President with The National Pain Foundation.
